US and Antigua Talk

July 23, 2008

A six member delegation from the United States, led by the Deputy United States Trade Representative, Ambassador John Veroneau, is on its way to Antigua to meet in regards to online gambling talks. They will be meeting with Finance and Economy Minister Dr. Errol Cort and other governmental officials to discuss the dispute between the two countries.

Dr. Cort said that he thought that there was a good chance that they could come to some sort of agreement and that there would finally be a resolution to their dispute. He was encouraged that the US was traveling there and felt it was in good faith.

He said that from the talks between the two countries it seemed evident that all parties would like to resolve the online gambling issue. He also felt that Washington truly wanted to finalize the matter once and for all and move past it.

The two day meeting that will take place is one that many thought they would not see come. There have already been three deadlines missed in regards to coming to a solution to the online gambling dispute.

With the World Trade Organization, or WTO, having already weighed in and ruled in favor of Antigua and Barbudas choice to impose sanctions on Washington, it is no wonder that they are looking to come to a conclusion on this. It seems that Washington is going to have to legalize online gambling, or they may end up with some heavy sanctions against them.
