| GamblingPhD menu | Abnormal Betting in China July 31, 2008 With China having a long history of abnormal betting, it is no wonder that they have been keeping an eye on those around the country as it gets closer to Olympic time. With the Chinese having the tendency to bet on pretty much everything, Olympic organizers are worried that this might come to play when it comes to the games themselves. Online gambling is illegal in China, but you still find betting on every corner in the country. However, with the amount of online gambling that has come into play recently, officials and authorities are concerned that the Olympics could somehow be compromised. Just earlier this month, China convicted 42 members of an online gambling ring. They got up to 15 years in prison each, for organizing online gambling for a little more than a year. It is considered to be the biggest online gambling syndicate case ever in China. In Macau, gambling is legal but online gambling is not. However, the Chinese are sure that they will be gambling no matter what they do. With gambling revenues increasing by the second, they know that once the Olympics start those numbers are going to increase exponentially. The Olympic Committee has already set up a special unit to keep an eye out for abnormal betting patterns. They are concerned about match fixing by athletes and sports officials, and know that they have to keep an eye out for anything suspicious. Back to July 08 Archive. |
