No Fooling Around Anymore

July 28, 2008

Malaysia is continuing on their quest to crack down on all illegal online gambling in the country. They have given notice to the online gambling cafs that are around the countryside, and say that this is all the notice they will be given.

Nga Kor Ming, Chairman for the states Education, Local Government, Housing and Public Transport Committee says that they have given a one-month notice to the cyber caf operators. Ming says that he had received complaints from parents about the cafs.

It seems that a lot of children were spending time in the online gambling establishments, and parents and teachers alike were concerned that they were gambling. He says that obviously, not all of the cafs were gambling dens, but many of them were.

He says that there were some locations that were giving loans to students and charging them loan shark interest. This was setting the children up to eventually reach a bad end. Ming says that they are closing them down immediately and that there will be no compromises and no appeals.

The president of the Perak Cyber Centre Association, Chang Tat Guan, says that they are pleased with the way that the government is handling it. They had a meeting on Tuesday between their association and local governmental officials and the government stepped up immediately to start doing something about the epidemic.

Ming says that they were finding children stealing money from their parents to try and pay off these online gambling debts. He has told the states various departments that because of this, they were not to entertain appeals from the operators.
