| GamblingPhD menu | Frank Wont Back Down July 17, 2008 There are very few things in this world that are sure things but the fact that Barney Frank is not going down without a fight is definitely one of them. Rep. Frank, a Democrat from Massachusetts has become the face of the fight to make online gambling legal again in the United States. Frank recently had a setback in the fight for online gambling rights, but he says that this wont change the course for him. He says that the issue is not going away, and neither is he. He says that he is now waiting to see the backlash against the Republicans who voted against the online gambling issue as he knows that there will be. With the majority of Americans wanting to see online gambling legal, there is bound to be some fall out especially come Election Day. The House Financial Services Committee was to vote on an amendment that would stop federal agencies from drafting regulations that would enforce the online gambling ban that was passed two years ago by Congress. The amendment was considered a sure thing, and that the only question would be by how big of a margin it would pass. However, the vote split down party lines and the Republicans voted against it with a 32-32 tie. Then the committee voted against legalizing online gambling and regulation of online wagering. Frank says that they underestimated the right wing of the Republican Party. However, Frank says that this is just the beginning of the fight for legalization of online gambling. He says that he isnt going anywhere and that time is on his side in this fight. Back to July 08 Archive. |
