| GamblingPhD menu | Porn and Online Gambling July 25, 2008 How many times have you thought that porn and online gambling go hand in hand? Never? How about child pornography? No to that too? Then you are among the majority of people who have never thought that way either. However, Rep. Spencer Bachus has somehow come up with a link between internet gambling and child pornography in what can only be seen as a last ditch effort to keep online gambling illegal. Perhaps he is thinking that if he can turn enough people off of it he will get public opinion on his side. He came out with his latest comments in his fight against the bill that would reverse the 2006 law that banned online gambling payment processing. The Payments System Protection Act would have rolled back the original bill and allow the processing to begin again. Bachus said that online gambling was the fastest growing addiction in America. He said that they were going to try and stop child pornography and illegal gambling over the Internet. He talked about the fact that he was against the bill because he was trying to protect the nations youth. He cited some other statistics that said that one third of college students that have participated in online gambling try to kill themselves. He compared it tot crack cocaine as well and by the time he was done there He claimed the motivation behind opposing the bill was protecting youth, citing a study by Canada's McGill University in which it was claimed that one-third of college students who have gambled online eventually try to commit suicide.
