China Really Doesn’t Want Online Gambling
July 7, 2009
China is doing everything they can to keep online gambling illegal in their country. They say that online gambling is a plague on their society and they are bound to try and keep it from destroying their citizens. First they made online gambling illegal, then they announced that all computers purchased by Chinese citizens would be carrying software on them that would block all online gambling sites. In fact, it would block any site that the government did not feel was appropriate.
Now they are cracking down on their residents and their desire to participate in online gambling by moving into the world of virtual reality as well. The country has decided that by making it impossible for people to use their virtual money to buy goods online that they will be able to stop online gambling.
This is tough for many sites that allow players to pay for free and instead of getting actual cash they pay them out in virtual money. This lets them keep participating in online gambling and it allows the sites to record the hits – and thus they make their money from the number of people that go to their site.
There was also those sites that used this virtual money for them to purchase actual goods where they would actually get something from it, or they could exchange the money for real money – still getting around the idea that they were paying people out. But now that Beijing has cracked down on that as well many people are left out in the cold.
