Internet Freedom is Not What You Think

July 6, 2009

The big deal this week is the United States feeling like they can tell China what they can do when it comes to online gambling – rich right? The country who is telling all of their residents that they cannot participate in online gambling is now telling another country that they can’t tell their people that they are not allowed to participate in online gambling. Huh?

China is dead set against allowing online gambling in their country and has been taking numerous steps to keep that from happening. They have cracked down on those online gambling dens they have been able to find, and they are now working with the computer manufacturers to put a stop to it once and for all. All computers that are sold in China for Chinese residents will now have anti online gambling software enabled on them. This software will stop residents from being able to participate in online gambling.

However, the US in their infinite wisdom has sent a letter to the Chinese government telling them that they cannot tell their people that they cannot participate in online gambling. They said that it is censorship, interferes with their resident’s free speech, compromises internet security and beyond that it violates the World Trade Organization’s regulations.

However, isn’t this what all of the other countries have been saying about the US over their online gambling ban? Haven’t we been accused of the exact same things only to turn around and change the rules as we see fit?
