Online Gambling Operators Win
July 7, 2009
It would seem that the online gambling community is doing well for itself in terms of lawsuits and court cases. There have been numerous cases here in the United States where the online gambling community has taken someone on and emerged victorious – and now we are starting to see the trend in countries other than our own. In Belgium the online gambling operators took their case to the courts and won there as well.
Bwin, William Hill and Unibet are just a few of the online gambling sites that have taken their case to the higher powers only to see it decided in their favor – something that many thought would not happen. The book makers were trying to use the various sports organizations’ names and events when they were taking wagers for that event. The online gambling operators were looking at having to pay them a fee however, each time they took their wagers.
The court said that online gambling was a completely separate business from the sports clubs and therefore they did not have to pay them a fee when taking bets on their sporting events. They said that they did not have any jurisdiction over the online gambling sites and denied their case to charge 2m Euros from the sites. They were also trying to keep the online gambling sites limited in the bets that they could take and that was denied them as well.
The lawyer for the online gambling firms said that they were thrilled by the courts’ ruling. They said that it was “part of the principle of freedom and commerce” and that the sports teams were asking for things that they had no right to ask for.
