Tribe wants to build Virgin Islands casino resort

June 30

There are many online gambling companies based out of small Caribbean nations. Now, the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation has plans to construct a casino resort in the US Virgin Islands.

Yesterday, the tribe, which runs the well known Foxwoods Resort Casino in Connecticut, announced new plans to construct a resort and casino that will sprawl on 600 acres. This is no small piece of land if you know the US Virgin Islands. This announcement further propels the new idea of Indian tribes wanting to diversify by building casinos off Indian reservations into the spotlight.

The would-be casino resort is slated to be built in St. Croix, where gambling is already legal - on the land that has all the old run-down sugar mills. Detailed plans call for a 400 room hotel, casino, a marina for boating, convention space, 2 golf courses, condos, retail space and much more. One feature that stands-out beyond the usual casino resort type plans - botanical gardens. This all sounds lush and looks good on paper.

Now, casino developers must get approval from the Virgin Islands Casino Control Commission. Another positive here is that legislators there typically endorse casino gambling to increase tourism and to put a boost in local economy.

Foxwoods, one of the World's biggest casinos, is located on tribal land and is very sucessful. Other tribes, including the Mohegans, have diversified, too. The Mohegans, operators of the popular Mohegan Sun casino, bought the Pocono Downs recently in Wilkes-Barre, looking to implement slots at the racetrack.

As it stands, it looks like a little sun, a little fun, and a lot of gambling in St. Croix. We can't wait. With a nice resort like this coming, many online gambling fans may take a time-out from online gambling and enjoy a weekend at the resort.
