| GamblingPhD menu | Young Gambling in Canada June 20, 2008 There are many in Canada that are concerned about a recent report that said online gambling had increased in the country. They say that many of the online gambling sites are geared and marketed toward young players, and this is unsettling at best. They are worried that there seems to be a correlation between those that play online gambling for free in their youth and gambling addiction. They say that by allowing them to play for free, they are setting them up for failure down the road. The main problem seems to be that the online gambling sites are set up so that they look a whole lot like video games. The young players get on and play for free and then end up continuing to play when it becomes a paying pleasure instead of a free one. In many cases these young adults end up online gambling addicts, and Canadians are concerned about how they might be able to change the course that they have been set upon. They say that they have to start with the way that these sites are marketed toward their youth. They say that millions are being spent on these online gambling sites and much of it is geared towards children and young adults. A recent study has linked the free online gambling to gambling addiction. It says that 25% of kids who gamble on the internet become online gambling addicts. |
