| GamblingPhD menu | Citadel Fined June 8, 2008 The Canadian Company ESI Entertainment Systems has been fined in their online gambling case. The online gambling company will pay $9.1 million to the US government as part of a probe of illegal online gambling. They are part of the larger investigation of illegal online gambling through one of its subsidiaries Citadel Commerce. The online company is accused of processing more than $2 billion in transactions from online gambling websites. The period in question is during 2003-2007. By paying the agreement with the prosecutors, the online gambling processing company will not be prosecuted on conspiracy charges. They will need to avoid getting into any troubles over the next 18 months and they will need to cooperate fully with the US government in their online gambling investigation. They admitted that they had broken the law and had not gotten a proper license. They also admitted to knowingly violating federal anti-gambling laws. This deal is similar to one that was entered into with NETeller after the arrest of their co-founders. Once John David Lefebvre and Stephen Eric Lawrence were arrested, the company entered into a deal with the online gambling payment company and they agreed to forfeit $136 million.
