Definition Not Forthcoming

June 30, 2008

It seems that the government is having a hard time coming up with a definition for illegal online gambling. They have been working on one to go with the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act that was passed in 2006, but so far they dont have an answer yet.

The Federal Reserve and the Treasury Department say that they cannot come up with rules to finalize the ban because they dont have all the wording yet. They say that as Congress has not put a clear cut definition on gambling, they cannot proceed with the ban.

The House Financial Services Committee voted on Wednesday to make federal regulators write a uniformed definition of what online gambling should and should not be accepted. There was a tie vote so they are no closer than they were months ago.

Many Americans were upset with the way the online gambling ban had been approached in the first place. It was attached to an unrelated port security bill by Bill Frist of Tennessee and many felt that they had deliberately deceived the American people.

The banks that are supposed to be enforcing the ban have not been able to because of the lack of direction from the government on what is actually legal and what is illegal.
