Turkey Holds Online Gambling Employees

June 5, 2008

It would seem, according to the online gambling site Sportingbet.com that the government of Turkey seems to feel that their grasp of the law extends beyond the reaches of their own country. The company wants to know where they get the right to detain two of their employees when they had not committed any crimes within the country.

The employees were staff at the online gambling company, and were there on vacation when they were arrested. The two employees were not together when arrested, but that is about all of the information that the Turkish government is releasing right now.

The country has gambling laws that make sense to no one except the government themselves. The country will not allow casinos but does allow gambling. Sports betting is legal, but you cant play the slot machines.

This is the same place where two British holidaymakers were arrested for playing bingo in a bar last year, which just goes to show the confusion that entails when trying to enforce the laws or to stay on the right side of them.

Not that the online gambling company is any stranger to jail cells as their Chairman Peter Dicks was arrested two years ago in New York. The US government was cracking down on online gambling sites and Dicks was arrested as part of that crackdown. However, he was eventually released with no charges filed against him.
