| GamblingPhD menu | Italy Embracing Online Gambling June 12, 2009 It is interesting to see the number of countries that are either completely embracing online gambling, or they are working hard to make it illegal. There are those that think that the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006 was the best thing since sliced bread, and then there are those that cannot make their rules and regulations easy enough for their online gambling companies. Italy is one of those companies that is embracing online gambling and making it easier for their residents to participate. Since making online gambling legal in their country, the number of people participating has grown substantially. In the course of one year, the number of online gambling participants has grown from 188 million Euros in 2008 to 200 million Euros in 2009. Needless to say that it is a large increase for just one year. The number of people participating in online gambling has increased as well, with it going up 9.5% in the first five months alone. The Italian government has really embraced online gambling, and with it increasing as much as it has the government has made substantial moves for the remote gambling industry to be able to gain more ground. They are bringing out more laws that will extend their licensing agreements and will make online gambling easier to access and promote. The country says that their goal is to be able to submit their proposed online gambling laws to the European Commission within the next couple of months. They would like to see the new laws in place by the end of the year and if all goes well they think they will be able to. Back to June 2009 Archive. |
