| GamblingPhD menu | Online Gambling is Very Popular in New Zealand June 24, 2009 It would appear that online gambling has become very popular in New Zealand. The latest reports on the online gambling numbers show that they are embracing the entertainment of it more than ever. In fact, they are spending about twice the amount a year on online gambling that they are currently spending on the lottery. The latest numbers show them spending around NZ$40 million a week. The Racing Board found that 5.7% of New Zealanders are participating in online gambling, lotteries and sports betting. They spend roughly NZ$2.1 billion a year which is really a lot for their country. But with all of this money coming in, only about $5.5 million a week is going to the racing and sports betting and all the rest is going to the online gambling sites. This has raised some concerns in the online gambling addiction world as they say that they have been working very hard to help those with a gambling addiction, and with this many participating in online gambling it is important to realize what this might mean addiction wise. At least with the live casinos they are aware of what people are spending, how long they have been there, etc. With the online gambling community it is all much more secretive and covert. They say that one of the biggest problems is with underage online gambling. They have more and more parents bringing in their children teenagers and younger who have developed an online gambling problem sitting in their living room. They say that they are participating in online gambling up to 60 hours a week and it is setting a bad example for what they are going to be looking at later in life. Back to June 2009 Archive. |
