Massachusetts Governor Still Wants Gambling

March 21, 2008

Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick is still pushing for gambling within the state, but wants to maintain the illegality of online gambling at the same time. Patrick wants three land based casinos in his state, as he says that it would bring in 30,000 jobs. However, Patrick is looking at problems from two sides – the online gambling side and the anti gambling forces within his own state.

House Speaker Salvatore DiMasi has been very vocal in his disparagement of the gambling idea in the state. He says that the casinos would not bring in the number of jobs that they say they will, and that they will actually not bring in any new jobs at all. This led Patrick to say that the number of new jobs could be closer to 10,000 but there will be new jobs.

However, DiMasi says that this is just one more instance where his numbers do not add up. He says that the governor has lost credibility in the gambling arena, and by constantly changing his facts and figures he simply shows that the numbers are completely fabricated and exaggerated.

Patrick says that they are in a time of “economic uncertainty” and that instead of simply attacking his plan, perhaps DiMasi should come up with one of his own. He says he is trying to help out the state and all DiMasi can do is criticize, but not constructively.

The online gambling community is also concerned about the passing of the bill. It might allow gambling within the state, but you would be limited to going to a casino. Residents would not be able to participate in online gambling at all. Needless to say, online gambling groups are waiting to see what comes of the argument with DiMasi before proceeding to attack it as well.
