Cambodia Lays Down the Law

March 14, 2009

According to Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, there will be no online gambling allowed in the country period. Sen said that there needed to be an end to online gambling because they needed "make social reform, strengthen public order, and improve social morality."

Not long after this announcement, his Minister of Finance for the Kingdom, Keat Chhon said that they would be terminating all valid online gambling licenses that may have been issued at an earlier date. They said that all online gambling, slot machines, sports betting, etc., were now completely illegal so as not to have any confusion. Those that are found participating will be held accountable.

There are many companies that have been functioning within the country under licenses that were awarded to them for online gambling. However, many of these companies were forced to immediately close their doors on moral grounds and are not expected to reopen right away. The business owners are upset because there was an investment made in these because they were legal.

Chhon has advised several of them to send letters explaining their situations to the Prime Minister to see if there can be a compromise made, but that he is unable to. He said that if they are going to continue to function it will have to come from the top not from his level of office.

Some of them have international ties to online gambling and are hoping they will at least be able to salvage that as long as they dont allow it within the country.
