Defending the Online Gambling Industry

March 25, 2009

It is getting tougher and tougher all the time for the government to maintain that the online gambling industry should remain illegal when everyone around them is saying that it shouldnt. They are hearing from the masses who are pressuring their congressmen, etc. to overturn the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, or UIGEA, and make online gambling legal and regulated.

Now they are getting it from within their ranks as well. The Competitive Enterprise Institute or CEI is a Washington research institute that is well known in the city. The company is a popular think tank that usually has the answers to things that the average person or group could not come up with on their own.

However, they have just released a statement that says that the online gambling industry should be brought out into the open because of the misconceptions that are currently surrounding it. CEI said that online gambling is clearly legal in the US even though most of the public doesnt realize that it is, and that the government has long been trying to keep the public from participating by using fear tactics.

They said that the only danger that comes from the online gambling industry is that which the government itself has created. They said that regulation does exist as there are sets of rules that have already been set up by the online gambling industry and by the various foreign nations. They said that only sports gambling is currently illegal under federal law, and only Washington State has a law that says online gambling is illegal.

In fact they said that the UIGEA does not make online gambling illegal at all, it simply tries to stop banks from making deposits to the sites. They said that the worst part is that the government is making assumptions based on old fears and misperceptions as they relate to gambling as a whole.
