Frank Will Not be Deterred

March 11, 2009

As Chairman of the Financial Services Committee, Congressman Barney Frank is nothing if not determined. He has worked long and hard over the past few years to get the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006, or UIGEA overturned and has vowed to not rest until he does so. Now with Democrats in power in the government, he thinks that online gambling might soon be regulated and legalized.

There is already a bill in the works that would repeal the online gambling ban, and Frank says that he is going to do everything in his power to make sure that it is passed. He said that he has an agenda for overturning the online gambling ruling, and for reforming US financial regulation. Those that are against the online gambling ban say that they could raise more than $50 billion through taxes on the industry. The bill is called the Internet Gambling Regulation and Enforcement Act of 2007.

When the UIGEA was first passed many said that it was a bad idea. They said that trying to keep online gambling illegal would be too hard and too expensive but they passed it anyway. Since that time they have been inundated with complaints from banks and other financial institutions saying that it is too hard to regulate. We are also in trouble with various other countries who want us to overturn it as we are affecting their online gambling industries as well.

Frank says that "the existing legislation is an inappropriate interference on the personal freedom of Americans and this interference should be undone and has made it his personal quest to overturn it. Fortunately for him he now has the support of the government as well.
