| GamblingPhD menu | New Study Shows Benefit of Online Gambling March 6, 2009 PricewaterhouseCoopers has recently completed a study that shows that online gambling legalization and regulation would be very good for the United States economy. The study says that nearly $52 billion could be raised over the next decade by allowing online gambling to flourish in the US and taxing the industry instead of banning it. The study comes at a really good time considering the efforts of those that are trying hard to get online gambling legalized and regulated. Those that are pro online gambling hope that this study will help convince Congress that online gambling could be good for everyone involved. The group Safe and Secure Internet Gambling Initiative says that online gambling is going to happen one way or the other, and regulating it would make it a much safer way for people to spend their time. They say that they need to take steps to protect the American consumers instead of leaving them out there on their own. The group also represents the Remote Gambling Association, which represents all of the companies in Europe that lost billions in revenue when the US passed the UIGEA. The study says that online gambling has continued to grow in spite of the ban, and revenue is now estimated about 22% higher than it was in 2007. The argument is that people are going to do it anyway so why not capitalize on it. Get the money that the country so desperately needs while protecting those that are playing from the less than scrupulous online casinos that are currently working out there.
