| GamblingPhD menu | UIGEA is Useless March 15, 2009 According to the group Focus on the Family the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, or UIGEA, is absolutely useless. They say that the law has done nothing to curb online gambling, and in fact since it was passed, online gambling has increased not decreased. They argue that the law did nothing to keep online gambling from becoming as prevalent as it is today. The group says that the online gambling industry has increased to over $20 billion in revenue last year alone, which means that since banning is not working, they are going to have to really start looking at regulating. They say that the law that ex President Bush signed to keep online gambling illegal simply pushed it to the forefront of Americans consciousness and it had the opposite effect of what it was meant to do. They say that people are so worried about taxes and mortgages, and their financial well being, yet they keep throwing their money away at online gambling. Tom McClusky, SVP of the Family Research Council says that online gambling is like the stock market, and just as that needed to be regulated, so does online gambling. He says that people keep putting their money where it should not be, instead of where it should in things that will actually give them a return. He says that the UIGEA is doing more harm than good right now and that it needs to be overturned. He would like to see a strictly regulated market instead, for that is the only way they will be able to protect citizens from the dangers of online gambling. Back to March 09 Archive. |
