| GamblingPhD menu | Utah Looking at Online Gambling Regulations March 3, 2009 Online gambling is the subject on every gamblers lips these days whether or not it should be legal. With the Obama administration in office now, it is a wonder whether or not they will legalize and regulate online gambling and thus make it a big money maker for the country as many have said it would be. But there are many who dont want any kind of gambling legal as they feel it is immoral. This of course is the great state of Utah. The state has long been opposed to allowing online gambling within their borders; in fact they dont want to see any kind of gambling at all. So why on earth would they be supporting the regulation of online gambling now? The state of Utah has come forward in support of Rep. Barney Franks bill that would regulate online gambling. They say that there are all kinds of unscrupulous behavior happening on the online gambling sites now and because of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, or UIGEA, there cannot be any kind of checks and balances for those that are still playing. They say people are going to participate in online gambling no matter what so they need to find a way to protect them. Utah does not want to see gambling in their state however, so they met with Frank to see if there was any way that they could continue to support him and the online gambling regulations, without allowing gambling in their state.
