Mohawks
Offer
Partnership
May
9,
2008
It
seems
that
both
Ottawa
and
Quebec
City
have
been
offered
a
lucrative
partnership
and
chose
to
turn
it
down.
The
Kahnawake
Mohawks
say
that
they
had
offered
a
spot
to
the
cities
and
there
was
a
draft
document
to
that
effect
submitted.
However,
the
province
rejected
the
offer.
The
online
gambling
giants
say
that
they
did
not
want
to
partner
with
the
tribe
to
they
didn’t
offer
again.
It
all
came
down
at a
time
when
the
tribe
was
launching
Mohawk
Internet
Technologies,
or
MIT.
This
was
also
shortly
after
the
Parti
Québécois
government
thought
about
a
reorganization
of
the
rights
of
the
tribe
to
handle
the
online
gambling
operations.
Both
Canada
and
Quebec
say
that
only
Quebec
has
jurisdiction
over
the
online
gambling
group,
but
this
has
not
stopped
MIT
from
operating
without
being
challenged
on
that
belief.
As
more
people
within
Canada
say
that
they
would
like
to
see
online
gambling
prohibited,
there
are
other
options
that
come
up.
Those
that
say
that
online
gambling
should
continue
want
to
see
horse
racing
tracks,
etc.
able
to
participate
in
gambling
as
well.
Those
acting
on
behalf
of
the
Kahnawake
tribe
say
that
the
tribe
should
be
recognized
as a
“legitimate
aboriginal
activity
under
the
Canadian
constitution.”
They
say
that
they
have
been
passed
back
and
forth
between
the
two
entities,
but
still
nothing
has
been
made
official.
They
say
that
they
are
in a
kind
of
limbo,
and
can’t
get
out
of
it
until
the
government
makes
some
sort
of
decision.
