| GamblingPhD menu | Sportingbet.com Staff Detained May 30, 2008 It seems that the government of Turkey is not fooling around when it comes to illegal online gambling. The country has started an online gambling crackdown and has detained two London based employees of the company. The Turkish police are holding two members of their middle management staff, but the online gambling company declines to name names. They are however, Turkish nationals who were there on holiday and were detained in Istanbul during a raid that also held 30 other people. The two were not together when they were detained, but met up later one can assume in prison. The online gambling company says that the detentions were related to Superbahis which is their Turkish facing business. They do not know exactly what is going on from the Turkish authorities, but according to sources they have been held in relation to Maslin Properties Inc. The country had passed legislation that prohibited certain kinds of online gambling from being offered by any unauthorized domestic or foreign company to citizens in Turkey". However, Sportingbet.com said that they thought that the law meant that they could accept bets from Turkish citizens as long as they did not have any assets or operations in the country. They say that this detainment would make it seem as though the Turkish people think that their law would extend outside of the boundaries of their country which would be erroneous.
