| GamblingPhD menu | US Model for Online Gambling Fight May 12, 2008 It seems that the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act is good for something. It seems that the Dutch have decided to use the UIGEA as a model for their own version of the law. They are making the processing of payments for online gambling companies illegal as well and they are using the UIGEA to do it. They say that it is illegal to offer online gambling services without a permit in the Netherlands, and those companies that are doing so are breaking the law. They are going to have a full crack down on online casinos very soon, and they say that this will serve as fair warning to those that are breaking the law. They say that some of the biggest names in the online gambling industry are targets such companies as Unibet and Oranje Casino. They have about 50 online casinos that are on a list that is being distributed to banks with the directions to not allow any financial transactions to these online gambling companies. They are also sending a list of the online casinos to the public prosecutor who will be bringing them to court as well. They say that they are only asking those banks in the Netherlands to comply as they feel this is a Dutch issue only. Many feel that they will have just as hard a time making their online gambling law work as the US did. However, others say that as they gave a clear cut list of those companies that are to be targeted, which the US has not done, they may be more successful at it than the US was.
