| GamblingPhD menu | Barr Wants Legal Online Gambling May 21, 2009 Bob Barr may just be campaigning for another run at the White House, but many think he is just stating the obvious. Barr says that online gambling should be legal because it is an infringement of Americans rights, although he says he has problems with the bill that Rep. Barney Frank has put forth as well. He thinks it is a step in the right direction, but by no means perfect. Barr ran for the Presidency last fall and although he did not win, there is a chance he could be attempting to run again next time around. The Libertarian candidate says that online gambling should be legal no matter how you look at it. He says that there is no reason why we should have empowered the federal government to continue prohibiting people from using the internet to place bets. He says that the UIGEA must be overturned and that the government should stop invoking the Wire Act for anything that might serve their purpose. He says that there are two problems with Franks bill though. The bill continues to keep sports betting illegal, which he has a problem with, and it will actually create more government. He says that in order to maintain the regulation and taxation of the online gambling industry they will have to create another governmental department under the Department of the Treasury to monitor it. Once a Republican, Barr left the party because he felt that the Christian social conservatism had taken over the party. He says that regulating and taxing online gambling is fine as long as the new department does not take liberties it is not authorized to take. It seems that with any government run program there are ultimately places that they go that they are not really at liberty to go to. Back to May 09 Archive. |
