Finland Looking into Ban

May 14, 2009

Finland is already on the European Commissions list of countries not doing what they want them to do, and now they are risking even more problems by looking at banning online gambling marketing. The country has made it very clear that they are against allowing other countries to come in and offer online gambling to their residents, and even though the EU has pressured them to change that law they have not yet done so.

Instead, now they are looking at bringing in an online gambling ban which is only going to serve to make the EU even angrier. However, they say that they are trying to comply with the EUs wishes by changing the way online gambling is offered in their state, but when it comes down to it they still arent allowing online gambling in their country from other countries so they arent doing what the EU wants.

They allow online gambling advertising from state betting and lottery companies right now, but under the new law that would be illegal. They would not be able to sponsor sports teams or advertise their services. Ladbrokes is one of the online gambling companies leading the charge against the country. Ever since they were denied a license from the Finnish Supreme Administrative Court in 2007 they have been working to open their borders.

There are a lot of countries that have chosen to defy the European Commission and not allow outside online gambling. However, Spain and the US are both allegedly working on compliance.
