Navajo chapters dispute
ownership issues over casinos
November 23
In Window Rock, Arizona, council
delegates of the
Navajo tribe chapters that are
trying to open casinos for business
are fighting
allegations that the Navajo Nation
itself would own the casinos instead
of the actual chapters that bring
them to life.
Delegates from
the To'Hajiilee, Shiprock and
Hogback chapters themselves fought
back against comments that were made
by tribal controller Mark Grant,
Chief Legislative Counsel Ray
Etcitty and Danielle Her Many Horses
from the justice division, regarding
the topic of ownership. Thay made
comments about the Navaho Nation
taking actual ownership.
During the session that lasted
two days for study, d elegates
that were in attendance were in a
constant form of disagreement of the
Navaho Nation's explanation of the
term "Navajo Nation"
The c hapters
that are vying and pulling for the
casinos are the To'Hajiilee, located
some 25 miles west of Albuquerque,
the Manuelito, which is located near
Gallup, New Mexico, the Hogback and
the Shiprock, which is located to
the west of Farmington, the Nahata
Dziil, located on Interstate 40
between Gallup, New Mexico and
Holbrook, Arizona, and the Leupp,
whose proposed casino would be right
outside the Flagstaff area.
