Online Casinos Affected By Bots

November 11, 2007

A recent report shows that online casinos could be susceptible to bots, leaving them open to risks such as money laundering. The risk compliance firm Fortent recently released a study that says that the online gambling world could be subjected to these bots that basically have the ability to rip off the online casinos and their patrons.

Law enforcement officials have long thought that the online gambling industry could be susceptible to this, and this report confirms those fears. Some of the bots are simply transferring “dirty money” to a chosen winner. This would be money that was acquired through illegal means such as drugs, stolen credit cards, etc.

Another bot changes the odds so that it seems that a particular player is cheating, even when they are not. Still another spams known players and gets them to give them personal information and then cleans out their accounts by using the above bots.

The FBI has gotten involved in trying to locate these bots, which is now making it much more difficult for them to use them. Until recently, they were basically running through the online gambling world with nothing to stop them. However, with the FBI now on the case, it seems that it is becoming much harder for those without an impressive amount of knowledge on the subject to get in.

One case that recently made headlines was that of FullTiltPoker.com which got hit by bots. They had many defrauded customers and had to refund money to all of those affected by the attack. However, experts are quick to point out that it is not just the online gambling community that is subject to this type of transaction. Any online business can be susceptible to money laundering, it does not have to be an online casino.
