Campuses
Embracing
Poker
November
20,
2007
Even
as
the
federal
government
continues
to
make
attempts
to
get
players
from
not
participating
in
online
gambling,
college
campuses
around
the
country
are
embracing
online
gambling
and
poker,
and
enjoying
every
minute
of
it.
Poker
seems
to
be
quickly
becoming
the
most
popular
of
the
online
gambling
venues
out
there,
but
there
are
those
that
participate
in
others
as
well.
However,
college
campuses
are
reporting
an
increase,
rather
than
a
decrease,
in
online
gambling
and
poker
playing.
College
students
make
up
the
majority
of
people
entering
the
online
gambling
world,
and
it
all
has
to
do
with
the
popularity
of
the
online
gambling
game
–
poker.
People
can
play
poker
anywhere,
but
for
some
on
campuses
they
are
using
it
as a
part
time
job.
Some
of
them
say
that
they
can
make
upwards
of
$1,500
a
week
playing
online
poker,
and
some
claim
they
make
even
more.
Poker
is a
game
of
skill,
which
is
probably
why
it
does
so
well.
Slots
are
more
about
the
luck,
and
you
don’t
really
see
anyone
traditionally
making
a
living
off
of
playing
slots
–
but
you
do
see
it
with
poker.
In
accordance
with
this
upswing
in
online
gambling
popularity
among
college
students,
websites
are
now
marketing
to
this
new
grouping,
and
targeting
specifically
college
aged
students.
Some
colleges
are
even
starting
to
offer
online
gambling
courses.
Harvard,
for
example,
offers
a
online
poker
class
for
those
who
wish
to
participate.
The
class
teaches
them
critical
and
strategic
thinking,
risk
assessment,
and
geopolitical
analysis.
They
also
learn
money
management,
and
these
are
qualities
that
we
traditionally
send
our
children
to
college
to
learn.
They
can
play
in a
group
environment,
and
watch
out
for
each
other
so
that
they
don’t
get
into
trouble.
Compulsive
gambling
can
be
kept
at
bay,
and
students
can
excel
at
the
game
while
bringing
home
a
little
extra
cash.
