Just Because Some People Have a Problem With It…

November 27, 2007

It seems these days that everyone is more interested in protecting those that might, some day, possibly have a potential problem with online gambling that it would be best to ban it from everyone. The moral majority has spoken it would seem, and they have decided that online gambling is dangerous and therefore no one can participate.

However, the only problem with this kind of logic is that it could apply to anything. Those that have a particular problem with online gambling are usually those that have a loved one who has committed some sort of crime to feed that online gambling addiction, but they are not the norm. Millions of people can play at online gambling without knocking over a convenience store to fund it.

Once people start allowing others to tell them what they shouldn’t do because it could be dangerous to them, we begin a slippery slope downward. You can’t participate in online gambling because you could become addicted. You can’t buy chocolate over the counter anymore because you could become addicted and thus get fat. You can’t ride your bike anymore because you could fall and thus get hurt. You see where this is going?

The American public understands that having to deal with someone with any sort of addiction is a terrible ordeal to go through. Whether it is online gambling, lottery tickets, drugs, food, etc. – addictions are a tough road to hoe. However, according to statistics, only 7.4% of those that participate in online gambling show signs of possibly having a problem.

This does not mean that it will deteriorate into knocking over liquor stores for cash to feed the online gambling addiction, it simply means that they need to watch themselves. By saying that those that become addicted to online gambling will turn to a life of crime to support it, you are saying that anyone with any sort of addiction will do the same thing. On behalf of the chocolate lovers out there, I am pretty sure that your local convenience store is safe from the likes of me.
