| GamblingPhD menu | Kentucky Man Wins November 28, 2008 It is interesting that a player from Kentucky did so well at the ESPN online gambling site. The online gambling sports site had started a contest in the fall in which they gave players the chance to win $1,0000,000 if they made 25 selections correct in a row. They had to choose to make picks from the different proposals that were on the site. The online gambling winner being from Kentucky though is what makes it so interesting. As you may have heard, Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear is in the process of trying to keep online gambling from existing in his state. He is trying to seize the domain names of more than 140 online casinos as he says he is trying to protect his residents from online gambling. He says that he is also keeping untaxed revenues from occurring in another state. However, now ESPN is going to have to pay Jordan Fulkerson a million dollars for participating in online gambling. Connecticut will be watching their million dollars in untaxed income go to Kentucky where it will be taxed. This is easily solved though, as Connecticut could simply take ESPN to court and seize their domain name. This would stop online gambling from taking a foothold in the state. This should keep Kentucky happy as well, for although they will now lose out on taxing that million dollar win, they will assuredly be in support of the other state now keeping those tax dollars for themselves. The precedent that Beshear is setting is that they are letting every state feel that they have their own control over online gambling. They would have to limit it to only those that participated from the state that the online casino is located in. |
