| GamblingPhD menu | Online Poker Before Online Gambling November 14, 2008 Many think that online poker will see the light of day before online gambling does. They believe that online poker is a game of skill and strategy, whereas online gambling is simply a way for companies to make money off of the poor and unsuspecting. Many in Congress have already expressed an interest in legalizing online poker as they say that it does not have the same things going on that online gambling does. It is usually a skill based game, which means that the outcome is determined by the player, not just the push of a button or pull of a handle. They seem to think that if online gambling is legalized then online poker will be as well. However, if online poker is legalized, online gambling will not necessarily be legalized in conjunction with it. Many see online gambling as preying on those that dont know any better, and think that they actually have a chance at winning. They dont see any reason to open the internet to that kind of trouble. Online poker though is a thinking persons game. You have to use cunning and strategy to win, and you have the ability to win based on your playing. This fact alone makes it much more attractive. People like the Chairman and CEO of Harrahs Entertainment, Gary Loveman, think that they stand a real chance at legalizing and regulating poker. He says that the outlook is good for those that are interested in online poker, but he agrees that it is not so cheery for those that are interested in online gambling as a whole.
