2009 Online Gambling Crackdowns
November 29, 2009
2009 has been an interesting year for the online gambling community. They have had their shares of ups and downs, that is for sure, but they have also seen their share of simply wacky stuff having to do with their industry. The online gambling industry is still working to get themselves legalized and regulated, but they have not as of yet had any success with this attempt.
They have seen the various online gambling crackdowns where the owners and operators of the sites that were allowing United States’ players to participate found themselves under house arrest of one sort or another. They also saw the bank accounts of the online gambling companies and their patrons seized in an attempt to “protect” us from ourselves. The Department of Justice has made it no secret that they are going to do everything within their power to crack down on online gambling – even though there are probably a lot bigger things out there for them to worry about like climbing murder rates across the nation.
Not only that, but many who elected President Obama to office are asking themselves where he stands in all of this. Many online gambling supporters voted for him as they thought that he would overturn the UIGEA, but as of yet he has been mum on the topic. As more and more online gambling operators are thrown in jail – where is he to stand up for them?
As bank accounts are frozen and online gambling patrons lose their money – because yes, it is their money – Obama doesn’t say a word, doesn’t call off the dogs, doesn’t do anything. Many say that things have actually gotten worse under his leadership because at least when Bush was in office he wasn’t going after the online gambling players themselves.
