Corzine Chooses to Work for Online Gambling

November
27, 2009

New Jersey Governor Jon S. Corzine is fighting on behalf of the online gambling world these days – having thrown his support behind legalizing online sports betting. He says that he is determined to bring online gambling to New Jersey as he feels that this is the right thing to do – and he says that the residents of NJ want it as well. Many thought that he would have given up by now – but is soldering on even after his recent loss to Chris Christie.

A judge has just given him the right to file a complaint against the state’s seventeen year ban against sports betting, going against the Department of Justice’s wishes. Corzine says that he is going to keep moving forward to try and get online gambling legalized, and it will be up to Christie to see if they want to continue the fight to make it so once in office.

Corzine had previously filed a motion in April to try and get online gambling legalized – claiming it was unconstitutional to keep it this way after so many years. There are many groups supporting him in his bid to get online gambling legalized, including State Senator Raymond Lesniak, the Interactive Media Entertainment and Gaming Association, and several horse racing groups. They say that the current law making online gambling illegal is putting them at an “economic disadvantage.”

With online gambling in the form of sports betting legal in Delaware, Montana, Oregon and Nevada – the state feels that it is only right that they should be allowed to offer it in their state as well. They say that with this legalization, the state could become “a hub for online gambling in the US.”
