Kyl and Bacchus Work to Keep Online Gambling Ban from Postponement

November
27, 2009

Two Republicans have stuck to ranks to join the fight for keeping online gambling illegal. John Kyl, Arizona state Senator and Spencer Bachus, Alabama state Representative have both thrown their weight against a bill that would postpone the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act from being implemented as of December 1st.

The two legislators are Republicans, which means they are really going with their party on this one. Both of them say that their constituents want online gambling kept illegal, so they have to do what their people want them to. They are fighting against the postponement and have written a letter to the Chairman of the Federal Reserve Board and the Secretary of the Treasury to inform them of their objection. The bill allows for a twelve month postponement of the bill that implements the regulations for the UIGEA – and they are determined to see that it does not pass.

The bill says that the regulations are not clear enough and that the banks support the position of postponing their implementation. Many realize that not only will this give them time to rework the regulations, but it will also give them more time to work on getting online gambling legalized again. This is why Bachus and Kyl are so set against it.

They said that they were aware that there were members of the House Financial Services Committee that had written in support of the online gambling ban postponement and that they felt that there was “no justification for delaying the compliance deadline.” The Republican Party is dead set against the online gambling ban being overturned and they are doing everything in their power to keep that from happening.
