Utah Afraid of Online Gambling

November
8, 2009

The state of Utah is concerned with online gambling. They are worried that if the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act or UIGEA is overturned and online gambling is made legal that they will be unable to make it illegal within their state. They fear that the legalization and regulation of online gambling would then lead to to the legalization of gambling within their state.

According to Rep. Jason Chaffetz of Utah, this online gambling bill could pass much faster than they had originally thought that it would. They are worried that Congress will legalize online gambling and this will make it impossible for them to keep it illegal within the borders of their own state. He is asking legal experts to help him fight against the passage of the bill, and to keep online gambling out of their state.

Chaffetz says that he had a meeting with Rep. Barney Frank that left him worried about the passage of the online gambling bill. He said that Frank assured him that the online gambling bill would pass it through committee and that it would be legalized it for the end of the year. He said that France could be "bluffing" but that he was not willing to take that chance.

He is asking for any interested parties to help him putting ends to the confusion and to assist them in finding a way to keep online gambling illegal within the state. As a whole they do not feel that online gambling should be legal in all, but they want to ensure that if online gambling is made legal that they can keep it out of their state in particular.
