Gov. Schwarzenegger
advocated a loyal crowd to
rebuff two November ballot
measures he thinks would
expand gambling and weaken
his talks
with tribes over taxes and
responsibility.
Proposition 68 would permit
card tables and horse
racetracks to operate some
30,000 slot machines if all
Indian tribes with gambling
facilities did not arrange
to give up one quarter of its
profits. Last week, proponents of the
bill ended their campaign,
thinking they had a slim chance of succeeding,
but the measure will remain
on the Nov. ballot.
Proposition 70 proposes to
decrease limits on Indian
land gambling and entails
tribes to pay corporate
taxes at the same rate as
other businesses, 8.84% of
their net revenue.
Gov.
Schwarzenegger says that
he has successfully
negotiated individual
deals with nine Indian tribes
in California and
has plans to reach other
deals with dozens of the
other Indian tribes.
