State wants
bigger share of
casino profits
October 13
The
state of Wisconsin
wants a bigger part
of the profit from
the casino planned
by the Menominee
Indian tribe in
Kenosha. This comes
from the state's
chief negotiator
himself.
Wisconsin
Administration
Secretary Marc
Marotta said that
Gov. Jim Doyle wants
the state to amass
over the current the
7-7.5% they already
receive. The state
is looking to raise
tax somewhere near
the amount that
other tribe pay
other states. The 7%
tax deal was decided
between the state
and the tribe twelve
years ago.
Recently, I
ndian
tribes have offered
other states as much
as 25% of their net
earnings. At this
time the state s not
detailing just how
much they are
looking to raise the
taxes
The state feels
that they have more
power to bargain
with the tribes now.
They feel that 7% is
very low compared to
what the casino
could earn.
