Tribe leaders happy
about CA setback
October 8
On
Thursday, The tribal leaders at
the expo
in Las Vegas commended the
possible defeat of a
voter initiative in California
that endangered their
domination on slot machines.
They also are very aware of the
many legal battles to come.
On Wednesday, those who
backed
Proposition 68 halted their
campaign against California's
race tracks and card rooms to
permit. They say that they will
move forward with their lawsuit to block Gov. Arnold
Schwarzenegger from signing new
casino deals with tribes.
Ever since
the late 1990s, only a reported
30% of
voters in California even oppose
tribes and gambling. Due to the
gaining support of such voters,
it should come as no real
surprise that this would even
happen.
A hand
full of tribes
have, in recent times,
renegotiated casino deals with
Schwarzenegger
to bid for more slot machines in
return for a
cut of slot revenue to the state
and other such concessions.
In addition, tribe l
eaders
look forward to the
biggest voter turnout among
American Indians in history this
November with a goal of one
million votes.
In the past, t
ribes
have leaned to support more
Democrats than Republicans,
though some Republicans have
taken up tribal issues.
Whatever the
outcome, only the voting
population can make the final
decision.
