Frank
Supports
Online
Gambling
Bill
with
Reservations
October
15,
2007
Unless
you
have
been
living
under
a
rock
for
the
past
year,
you
are
aware
that
the
Unlawful
Internet
Gambling
Enforcement
Act
was
passed
and
that
there
are
currently
three
camps
of
people:
those
that
want
to
see
online
gambling
legalized,
those
that
want
to
see
it
illegal,
and
those
that
just
don’t
care.
Barney
Frank,
a
Democrat
from
Massachusetts
falls
into
the
first
category.
Frank
has
been
building
support
for
his
bill,
the
Internet
Gambling
Regulation
and
Enforcement
Act
of
2007
(IGREA)
which
would
make
online
gambling
legal
again
in
the
United
States,
but
would
regulate
it.
He
has
been
very
critical
of
the
online
gambling
bill
that
passed
last
year,
and
has
been
trying
to
get
his
bill
more
support
so
that
he
can
get
it
passed.
In
the
interim,
Rep.
Shelley
Berkley,
a
Democrat
from
Nevada,
has
asked
him
to
co-sponsor
her
bill
that
calls
for
a
one
year
study
of
online
gambling
in
the
US,
so
that
they
can
see
the
true
pros
and
cons
of
the
online
gambling
industry.
Frank
has
stated
that
he
sees
very
little
to
gain
from
such
a
study,
but
will
continue
to co-sponsor
it
anyway.
As
he
only
has
37
co-sponsors
for
his
bill
at
this
point,
he
says
that
support
for
the
regulation
of
online
gambling
seems
to
have
come
to a
halt
at
the
moment.
However,
with
the
European
Union
and
the
World
Trade
Organization
fighting
on
behalf
of
the
other
countries
that
depend
on
online
gambling
to
support
themselves,
he
feels
that
there
will
be a
strong
surge
in
support
for
the
bill
as
the
public
puts
additional
pressure
on
their
representatives
so
as
not
to
have
to
pay
the
penalties
associated
with
the
bill.
He
says
that
pressure
is
going
to
increase
as
more
and
more
countries
start
looking
for
income
from
the
US.
Frank
says
that
he
will
support
the
online
gambling
bill
with
reservations,
as
he
looks
to
gain
more
support
for
his
own
bill.
