Gary
Kaplan
Denied
Bail
October
6,
2007
The
online
gambling
giant
BetonSports
came
under
fire
last
year
and
their
founder
Gary
Kaplan
tried
to
run
rather
than
face
charges
from
the
US
Department
of
Justice.
He
had
been
indicted
by
the
US,
and
had
fled
the
US,
but
was
captured
by
US
authorities
a
few
months
later
and
held
for
illegal
online
gambling
charges.
Kaplan
has
been
spending
his
days
behind
bars
since
then,
but
recently
requested
to
be
bailed
while
waiting
for
trial
as
there
were
health
issues
that
needed
to
be
taken
under
consideration.
However,
the
judge
denied
bail
saying
that
"there
is
no
condition
or
combination
of
conditions
of
release
that
would
reasonably
assure
the
defendant's
appearance."
The
company’s
CEO
David
Carruthers
was
also
arrested,
and
the
company
has
pled
guilty
to a
single
charge
of
racketeering.
However,
what
really
puts
the
nail
in
the
coffin
for
Kaplan
is
that
the
company,
instead
of
standing
behind
its
founder,
has
chosen
to
turn
on
him
in
an
effort
to
save
their
own
behinds.
They
are
forwarding
evidence
to
the
US
prosecutors
against
Kaplan
so
that
things
won’t
be
so
bad
for
them,
as
Kaplan
is
pleading
not
guilty
in
the
case.
Many
feel
that
the
company
could
have
at
least
tried
to
fight
the
ban,
considering
how
big
they
were,
and
that
this
would
have
been
a
huge
help
to
those
that
fought
the
online
gambling
ban.
However,
as
the
company
has
chosen
not
to
support
their
founder
or
even
go
against
the
government
on
behalf
of
their
players,
experts
predict
that
BetonSports
will
eventually
fall
from
grace
from
everyone,
not
just
the
US
government.
