SA Internet Gambling Act Comes Under Fire

October 24, 2007

Experts in South Africa are asking for the National Gambling Amendment Bill to go back to the drawing board as they say that there are numerous problems with the legislation. The Casino Association of South Africa, otherwise known as CASA, has asked the Economic Affairs Committee to look at the bill once again as they say there are some fundamental problems with it.

They believe that it needs more research on taxes that could be charged to online gambling groups that want to operate an online gambling site. They say that they think that the current act should not be amended, rather a new one should be written. They say that the new bill does not say how much tax online gambling operators would actually pay.

CASA thinks that land based and online gambling sites need to pay the same taxes and that there should be no difference between the two industries. They say that by charging one group higher or lower taxes than the other, they could be looking at financial losses.

The bill was proposed so that they could eliminate illegal online gambling and protect players from themselves and gambling addiction. They were also attempting to curb underage gambling, and show transparent gambling as well. However, CASA says that there are too many issues in the new bill that require debate with the other provinces. They say that the bill just isn’t ready to go as it now stands.
