UIGEA
Doesn’t
Stop
ASU
Students
October
25,
2007
Even
though
the
Safe
Port
Act,
went
into
effect
a
little
over
a
year
ago,
ASU
students
are
continuing
to
participate
in
online
gambling.
The
addendum
to
the
Act,
the
Unlawful
Internet
Gambling
Enforcement
Act
or
UIGEA,
was
designed
to
stop
online
gambling
among
US
citizens.
However,
many
have
continued
to
gamble
and
ASU
is a
perfect
example
of
that.
The
school’s
students
say
that
although
they
are
aware
that
the
UIGEA
made
online
gambling
seem
illegal,
it
actually
only
made
the
payment
processing
part
of
it
illegal,
so
they
continue
to
gamble.
They
say
that
they
see
the
law
as
being
more
of a
“suggestion”
of
not
to
gamble
rather
than
an
actual
law
stating
that
online
gambling
was
illegal.
Many
of
them
use
offshore
accounts
so
that
they
aren’t
breaking
the
law
as
it
pertains
to
the
processing
of
monies
through
the
country’s
banks.
Several
of
them
stated
that
they
prefer
ePassporte
as
they
think
that
it
is
reliable
and
is
just
like
an
online
banking
system.
From
the
offshore
accounts
that
they
use,
the
money
then
gets
deposited
into
their
US
accounts
for
their
wins,
and
into
their
online
gambling
websites
for
gambling.
The
site
is
basically
a
virtual
Visa
account,
and
you
have
the
option
of
having
a
Visa
card
or
not
with
it.
However,
it
is
more
like
a
debit
card
as
there
is
no
credit
check
involved.
Students
say
that
since
there
are
still
plenty
of
places
accepting
US
money
and
accounts,
there
is
no
reason
why
they
should
stop
participating
in
something
that
they
really
enjoy.
For
some,
the
ones
who
are
good
at
it,
they
say
that
online
gambling
is
actually
a
source
of
additional
income
for
them
–
which
college
students
can
never
have
enough
of.
