| GamblingPhD menu | So Far So Good for Kentucky Online Gambling October 6, 2008 It seems that the online gambling industry has dodged a bullet for the time being in regards to Kentucky. The Governor of Kentucky, Steve Beshear, is trying to eliminate online gambling entirely by attempting to seize 141 internet domain names. However, Beshear will have to wait for now as Judge Thomas Wingate ruled on Friday that both parties will first have to submit briefs to him regarding the online gambling names. He then ordered a continuance in the case. Had Beshear won, he would have gotten all of those domain names forfeited to the Commonwealth of Kentucky which would then block access for residents. However, he is fighting a large group that is going to do everything they can to ensure that this does not happen. For the defendant we have the Interactive Gaming Council, the Interactive Media Entertainment and Gaming Association, and the Poker Players Alliance. According to them, the state was trying to get counsel identify who the owners of those domains were so they could grant standing. The groups are all expected to do so. The PPA is asking all of their Kentucky members to call and/or write the governors office letting them know they do not approve. They say that they are hoping that the governor will be reasonable, but they will continue to fight in the interim. Back to October 08 Archive. |
