Denmark Facing Problems with Online Gambling Laws
October 13, 2009
The European Commission wants Denmark to legalize online gambling, but they want it done on their terms. The problem with this is that Denmark also wants it done on their terms. They recently filed their draft of regulations as to how they would legalize online gambling within their country, but the European Commission is not pleased with those regulations.
Danish legislators have drafted new online gambling laws and they say that they are in compliance with what the European Union had asked them to do. The European Union had asked them to abolish the monopoly that they had set forth previous to now, and to allow a more open online gambling industry for all of their member states. They said that by opening their industry it would make for a level playing field for all countries, which ultimately would end up in more revenue for everyone.
However, the European commission has decided that they are going to impose a waiting period for the country because they say that these laws do not follow the guidelines that they had asked them to follow. With this delay Denmark cannot move forward until at least November 9 with their plan to legalize online gambling. The European Gambling and Betting Association says that they support Denmarkâs move to legalize online gambling, but that it has to be done the way that they wanted it done.
They said that the proposal does not take into account securities and controls that other European Union jurisdictions are already offering. They also say that they are continuing their monopoly on their horse racing and they want that eliminated as well.
