Larson Nice Addition
October 13, 2009
Rep. Barney Frank has had a lot on his plate. In addition to being on several committees in the government, he has also worked tirelessly to get the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act overturned and online gambling legalized. The UIGEA has become a thorn in his side as there are still so many people working against him to get online gambling legal within the United States.
However, as public opinion has shifted towards pro-online gambling, his job has gotten somewhat easier. Slowly more and more representatives have signed on to co-sponsor the online gambling bill, making it a slightly easier road for him to travel. On Thursday, Rep. John B. Larson became the 61st cosponsor of this new online gambling legislation that he’s been trying to get passed.
The banks and financial institutions have already made it clear that they are not in favor of the regulations that have been put forth with the online gambling Bill. They say that it is almost impossible for them to handle the job that the government has given them, and they say that with the economic crisis that the country is currently in it is simply giving them one more thing to worry about.
Experts believe that the UIGEA was not quite what many lawmakers thought that it would be. They believe that there is now disillusionment within Congress that’s perhaps the bill should never have been passed and that online gambling should be legal. This can be seen in the number of representatives that have slowly but steadily joined the movement to get online gambling legalized again.
