AC picket limit set
September 27
During a picket in Atlantic City this
weekend, it appeared that the casino
workers that were actually participating
in the ordeal, didn't have much affect on
the visitors to effect visitors to the
city. To many onlookers, it seemed like
business as usual. One person it did draw attention to
was William Nugent, a superior court
judge.
Judge Nugent ruled that the protest by
members of the union known as Local 54 must be limited.
Saturday, he issued a temporary
restraining order that put a limit to
the number of pickets that were allowed
to be put up near entrances to the
Tropicana Hotel and Resort. Also, the
order stated that picketers were to
remain at least 20 feet from the doors
of the Tropicana
Today, an application
for a permanent injunction was set to be
up for debate.
The union involved, Local 54 of the
Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees
union, that
represents such people as cooks, housekeepers,
cocktail servers, food servers,
bartenders, is in disagreement
with Atlantic City casinos over contract
disputes.
If no agreement is reached by this
coming Friday, the union plans to
formally strike then.
