Company still wants casino
in Rhode Island
In Rhode Island, Harrah's
Entertainment, along with a
large group of supporters, say
that they will in no way back
down from trying to get a casino
constructed in Rhode Island,
even though there have been some
set backs in the process.
Gary Loveman, a chief
executive of Harrah's, was at
the was in Rhode Island on
Monday to pledge his support in
the matter. He believes that
despite setbacks, supporters and
the like will succeed in getting
their casino. He also mentioned
that Harrah's will also be
looking into Massachusetts as
well.
Harrah's had worked with the
Narragansett Indian Tribe in
order to develop a casino in the
town of West Warwick. In the
beginning, the project was in
need of voters, and legislators
voted to put a referendum on the
ballot. A Superior Court
stonewalled it from going to
voters, announcing that it would
likely be squashed by implying
that it went against the
constitution.
Gary Loveman additionally
mentioned that the company was
backing away from a slander
lawsuit it had threatened
against Gov. Don Carcieri
regarding statements the
governor made during a
convention focused against
gambling.
