Copa
Casino
employees
let-go
after
Katrina
September
20
In
Gulfport,
Mississippi,
it is
being
reported
that
employees
of the
Copa
Casino
may have
been
given
final
paychecks.
Many
online
gambling
fans are
surprised
to hear
this
because
so many
of the
other
Gulf
casinos
are
keeping
employees
on the
payroll.
Sadly, r ather
than
getting
a 3
month
pay
check
including
benefits
like
most
other
area
casinos,
the Copa
Casino
employees
may have
received
their
final
checks.
The
terminations
along
with the
checks
has been
said
have
taken
place
the day
Katrina
hit the
Gulf
Coast
heavily
damaging
many
casinos.
While
Harrah's
and MGM
Mirage
workers
received
3 months
pay and
benefits,
Copa
Casino
workers
say the
company
that
prided
itself
on being
locally
owned
and
operated
is not
offering
the same
level of
compassion
to its
area
employees
in need.
Casino
workers
are
reporting
that
they
were
indeed
fired on
August
29, the
same day
Hurricane
Katrina
made
landfall
and
damaged
just
about
all
structures
in the
immediate
area.
In
response,
a n
executive
with the
Copa,
stated
that the
company
was not
a big
casino
company
capable
of
retaining
its
employees.
It seems
the
company
was
locally
owned
and
operated,
but
cannot
afford
to
support
its
payroll
with no
incoming
revenue.
The
Treasure
Bay
Casino,
which
was
suing
its
insurer
to
recover
damages
from
past
storms,
also did
not
provide
separation
pay to
its
workers,
either.
